Bayern Munich has summoned former player Arjen Robben as an expert ahead of the duels with Manchester City in the Champions League quarterfinals. The 39-year-old from Groningen has played against Manchester City seven times in his career with Chelsea and Bayern Munich, among others, and left the field a winner on six occasions.
“It will be better that Bayern sign me again. Coach Thomas Tuchel can always call me”, Robben says with a laugh in an interview on the ‘Rekordmeister’ website. He then quickly adds that he actually stopped playing soccer. “Just kidding, I can’t do that anymore.”
Robben says he has mainly good memories of the games against the English club. “The first memory that comes to mind is winning the away game 1-3 in the Champions League in 2013. That was a great game for us,” said Robben, who later scored Manchester’s third goal. A few months earlier, he had led Bayern Munich to the Champions League by scoring the winning goal in the final against Borussia Dortmund.
The English and German champions meet in Manchester in the quarter-finals on Tuesday night. The return in Munich follows eight days later. “This is a summit. It could have been the final,” said Robben, who played under current City manager Pep Guardiola at the German club from 2013 to 2016.
Matthijs de Ligt faces Erling Haaland in duels with Manchester City, who scored with a nice Chilean in the first leg against Southampton (1-4) yesterday. The 22-year-old Norwegian already has 44 goals in 38 games with Manchester City. In the Champions League, Haaland’s figures are also impressive: 33 goals in 25 games.
De Ligt himself was also in fine form, beating Mark Flek with a fine strike on Saturday afternoon for the winner in the away game against SC Freiburg: 0-1.
