A Televizier-Ring nomination, a concert at Ahoy and a success that can no longer be ignored in the pub: John de Bever is now an established name in the world of Dutch entertainment. The third series of the soap opera the Beavers started on thursday. The success? “We are very ordinary.”
“The soap opera is very airy, it’s not really about anything,” the 57-year-old singer tells NU.nl. The show follows the life of the singer and her husband (and manager) Kees.
“The strength of the show is that it’s so recognizable. Kees (Stevens, De Bever’s husband and manager, ed.) checks the schedule and then I go to all sorts of places to perform. In any case, it’s enough happening.”
It is said that many reality series are staged. Bee the Beavers if not, assures the artist. “Nothing is scripted. I always keep to myself. I would never want to act.”
Which also helps: The film crew is like family to De Bever. “They even have the key to my house. If they come in and start filming while I’m still in bed, that’s fine by me.”
“Everyone is watching, from Caroline van der Plas to my doctor”
To the first seasons of the Beavers between 300,000 and 400,000 people watched. No doubt some viewers can add to that, because the RTL 5 series can also be streamed via Videoland. But that service does not share figures.
“I’ve heard from everyone that they like us a lot because we’re so ordinary. All kinds of people are looking at us.” the Beavers. Caroline van der Plas, my doctor, Johan Derksen’s wife”, sums up the singer. “Young people also want to take a picture with us. Especially with Kees, he really is the star of the show. Everywhere I go they ask me: where is Kees?
De Bever enjoys working with her husband. “He fills in exactly what I’m missing. And that’s quite a lot. He sends Me, he makes sure everything goes right. All I have to do is sing. As long as he can make people happy.”
Fanatic supporters resulted in a Televizier nomination
the Beavers he was nominated for a Televizier-Ring last year. The series was only on TV at the time, but thanks to De Bever’s fanatical following, enough people voted for the series. There was quite a stir over this, because the telenovela does not have an audience of millions. And people found it strange that a series with such light-hearted content could win such a major television award.
Such negative messages do little for the singer. “If there’s criticism, it usually means it’s good. I didn’t mind that we didn’t win the Televizier-Ring. I thought it was very unique that we were in the bottom three after six episodes. So you have that too.” I experienced it again, I think. I’m very sober about it. I only care about losing with football, because you can control it yourself.”
‘I’m really a Sunday boy’
If you can’t get enough of De Bever and want to see him live in action, you can go to Rotterdam Ahoy on September 30. There, De Bever and her husband are organizing a singing concert with all kinds of guest artists on the RTM stage in the smaller Ahoy room.
“It’s going to be a big party in the living room. On Ahoy, because our house is too small for that. It’s going to be a party as they know us on TV. With singers, guest artists and my husband Kees as host. No I don’t know many yet details, except that I have thirty songs to practice in the near future.”
Without a doubt, his hit will also come You can’t take that smile off my face past. The song is played a lot in canteens and football locker rooms and also became an anthem for the Orange Women during the 2017 European Championship. The song reached number one on the chart.
“It won’t be easy to top that,” says De Bever. “That’s not necessary, I make music because I like it. In fact, I didn’t want to release the song. But Marianne Weber told me to do it anyway. And it became a huge hit. This also makes me realize that I really I am a Sunday child I am “.
