Erling Haaland once again made his mark for Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday. The striker made an important contribution to the 4-1 win over Southampton with two hits, including a Chile half. Wandering Chelsea lost 1-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Manchester United were too strong for Everton 2-0.
Haaland scored the first goal at St. Mary’s Stadium just before half time. The Norwegian headed a pass from Kevin De Bruyne from close range. Jack Grealish made it 0-2 on the rebound in the 58th minute, but ten minutes later he was at the base of the best goal of the evening.
Grealish’s cross came slightly behind Haaland, but the superior striker did not hesitate for a moment and outwitted Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu with a half-bike kick. Haaland, who returned after a groin injury, was immediately given a crowd change a minute later. He already has 44 goals this season.
Southampton did make a comeback through Sékou Mara, but that was nothing more than an honorary goal. Julián Álvarez fired at City from the penalty spot for a trouble-free win. Nathan Aké was once again a basic player for ‘The Citizens’ and was substituted on 81′.
Manchester City reduced the gap with Arsenal to five points. Next week, Pep Guardiola’s team will play again in the Champions League. City will face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, starting with a home game on Tuesday.
Chelsea lose on Lampard’s return
Lampard’s return as Chelsea manager came to nothing. Wolverhampton midfielder Matheus Nunes scored the only goal of the game against Molineux in the 31st minute, sending Chelsea to a fourth successive points defeat. The two-time Champion of the Champions League has not even scored in the last three games.
Despite the big investments, Chelsea is nothing more than a central mover this season. Coach Graham Potter was sacked six days ago, after which Bruno Saltor Grau was last in charge on the bench against Liverpool (0-0) on Tuesday.
Against Wolverhampton, Lampard was head coach for the first time on an interim basis. The club icon was sacked as Chelsea manager two years ago and must now try to make something of the season. Chelsea will play Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.
Manchester United achieved a simple victory at home (2-0) over Everton. The return of Christian Eriksen gave an extra shine to the victory of the team led by coach Erik ten Hag. Eriksen came on in the 77th minute. Then the final score was 2-0. Scott McTominay provided the break for the first goal by shooting from a difficult angle. In the second half, Anthony Martial scored the second goal.
At odds with the joy of Eriksen’s return was the failure of Marcus Rashford. The United trendsetter stumbled off the field in the closing stages and was replaced by Wout Weghorst. It’s unclear what exactly is wrong with Rashford. Tyrell Malacia had a starting job at Manchester United.

Red for Tottenham and Brighton managers
Like Manchester United, Newcastle United remains on track to secure a Champions League ticket. ‘The Magpies’ beat Brentford 1-2, after trailing 0-1 at half-time. Ivan Toney converted a penalty for Brentford late in the first half. In the second half, Newcastle took all three points with an own goal from Brentford player David Raya and a goal from former Willem II striker Alexander Isak.
Tottenham Hotspur won 2-1 against Brighton & Hove Albion after the managers of both clubs were sent off. Tottenham’s Cristian Stellini and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi collided on the goal line in the 58th minute, with referee Stuart Attwell flashing the red for both Italians.
The score at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was 1-1 at the time, thanks to goals from Son Heung-min (Tottenham) and Lewis Dunk (Brighton). Ten minutes before the end, Harry Kane gave victory to Spurs. Arnaut Danjuma had come on for the home team a minute earlier, while Joël Veltman had a starting job at Brighton.
Aston Villa won 2-0 at home against Nottingham Forest. Bournemouth were the strongest 0-1 visiting Leicester City and West Ham United against Fulham also finished 1-0.
