SC Heerenveen secured a hard-fought win over FC Volendam on Saturday night. Coach Kees van Wonderen’s team had a particularly difficult time with the visitors, especially after the break, but they triumphed: 2-1. The full goal production was attended to before half time. Two Sydney van Hooijdonk goals canceled out a Henk Veerman goal. Thanks to the victory, Heerenveen rises to eighth place in the ranking. Volendam is fourteenth, with three points above the relegation zone.

Heerenveen knew what to do, having lost the last five home games in a row. Never before have the Frisians lost six games in a row at their own Abe Lenstra stadium. Van Wonderen’s team can boast of good results against Volendam this season, having won the two previous meetings (league and TOTO KNVB Cup). This time too, the home team shot out of the starting blocks. The ball was in the net after six minutes, when Van Hooijdonk was able to finish from close range after some good preparation from Osame Sahraoui.

Van Hooijdonk thus became the first Heerenveen player to score in five consecutive games since Alfred Finnbogason in May 2014. The revelry lasted no more than ten minutes, however, as the visitors quickly gave something back in the person of Veerman. The former Heerenveen striker controlled a nice through ball from Calvin Twigt to the chest and finished off very well: 1-1. The high leader of the attack could have hurt his former employer even more, but Xavier Mous could avoid a second chance.

Two minutes later, Van Hooijdonk had his sights on the other side. The striker was there like chickens when Milan van Ewijk was stopped and chased the ball to the short cross: 2-1. Heerenveen then came out of the dressing room very badly at the start of the second half and Mous could thank Mous for not leveling the score quickly. Andries Noppert’s replacement had a feline rescue after an individual action by Gaetano Oristanio. The defense of the Frisians was very busy with the lightning of the Italian wings.

Also in the last quarter of the game it was Volendam who insisted the most, without creating great chances. The best chance went to Walid Ould-Chikh, but his effort was deflected by excellent goalkeeper Mous. Moments earlier, the Heerenveen substitute goalkeeper spotted a Florent Da Silva bicycle kick just over the goal. As the badly injured Mous visibly yearned for the final signal, he had to make one last successful appearance three minutes before the end with a shot from distance by Carel Eiting.
